My initial goal was to get as lean as possible to see my abs for the first time in my life. I had been training weights in the gym for a few years prior to deciding to drastically change my diet. I had focused so greatly on trying to get “big” that I gained a great amount of fat.
I started with my diet by tapering down and lowering my calories with a low carb, high fat and protein diet, adjusting calories as required according to my weekly weigh-ins.
Seeing progress through strict dieting, which became a lifestyle rather than a chore, helped motivate me throughout the process which took about 8-9 months in total.
My weight training was kept the same, with a 5-day split, but became more intense with less resting times between sets.
I included cardio a few months in to boost the fat loss progress. Initially, it was unfuelled cardio in the morning which I switched up with towards the end stages of the cut with High Intensity Interval Training (HIIT) with uphill sprints on the treadmill.
What I have learned from all of this is that diet is the key. It is not possible to just train hard and exercise right if your diet is wrong – ultimately it is what fuels your body.
